Gingivitis occurs when moderate amounts of plaque and tartar (calculus) accumulate around your teeth and gums, due to infrequent trips to the dentist or insufficient home care. This causes inflammation and bleeding of your gums. A gingivitis cleaning consists of scaling (scraping) your teeth to remove tartar and plaque deposits. Once a gingivitis cleaning is completed along with proper home care, a patient's gums should return to relative health.
