Partials and dentures

Missing teeth can be replaced by 2 types of removable dentures, partial dentures and full dentures.

Partial dentures replace missing teeth on either side of the mouth and are anchored to the remaining natural teeth with clasps. Partial dentures are usually made with metal frameworks and clasps, with the replacement teeth attached to gum colored acrylic bases. There are also partial dentures that are metal-free for enhanced cosmetics. Consult with your dentist to determine which type of partial denture is appropriate for your situation.

Full dentures are prescribed when there are no remaining natural teeth. They are made of an acrylic base in which the denture teeth are embedded. They help improve chewing, speech and help to support the facial muscles. Immediate dentures are placed on the same day that the remaining teeth are extracted, and worn for several months until the gum tissues heal and stabilize. A conventional set of dentures are then made for long term use. Making a set of dentures requires multiple visits and may take a month or more. Dentures can also made to attach to dental implants for improved retention and stability.

Wearing a new set of partials or dentures can feel foreign and awkward at first. With time, your gums will grow accustomed to having the denture or partial in place. Adjustments to your denture or partial will be made by your dentist to relieve sore spots and improve comfort. Your dentist will also advise you on the proper care and cleaning of your partial or denture. Maintaining your partial or denture will help reduce stains and discolorations and well as prolong its lifespan.
