Root canal treatment
Inside each tooth resides the pulp, which consists of the nerve and blood vessels. The pulp can be damaged by a deep cavity or filling, trauma, or a crack which allows bacteria to seep in into the pulp. Once the pulp is damaged, it becomes inflamed and infected, causing pain and eventually an abscess. Root canal treatment is the procedure in which the diseased nerve is removed with specialized instruments. The pulp chamber and root canals are then disinfected using a medicated irrigation. The pulp chamber and root canals are then dried and a sealer is applied to seal the root canals. After root canal treatment is completed, it is often necessary to place a filling or buildup into the tooth and then a crown to protect the tooth over long term. Complex root canal cases may require a referral to a root canal specialist (endodontist) for treatment.
